A Marine Toilet and A Waste Tank
Marine Toilets, sometimes referred to as "The Head" also work quite differently from residential toilets. There's no toilet tank; the head has a motor that pulls water from either the onboard watertank or directly from the body of water the vessel is located on. The waste then goes into the holding tank & is either pumped out @ your local marina, or can be discharged directly overboard in Saltwater provided the vessel is a minimum of 3 NM offshore. No waste discharges are allowed on any Freshwater Body. Online boat parts shops also sell marine head parts so you can repair / replace the defective component when called upon to do so.
In addition, your vessel should have a 3-Way Valve installed in the discharge line that allows you to either discharge into a waste holding tank or directly overboard, based upon current USCG Regs applicable to discharge of waste. This 3-Way valve incorporates a design to allow the Mariner to lock the valve in the closed position so no waste is accidently discharged. The USCG will sometimes board your vessel to determine if the 3-Way Valve is “locked in position” to prevent an accidental discharge. If they find no locking mechanism they will most likely fine you for this violation.
Marine Waste Pumps
Today most Marine Toilets incorporate a Macerator Pump @ the base of the toilet. It’s job is to grind up the solid waste before it’s transferred to the Waste Holding Tank.
